In three words, Pilates is Stretch, Strength and Control

Pilates is a method of body conditioning developed by Joseph Pilates over 80 years ago. Originally called “The Art of Contrology” or the “Art of Control,” Pilates offers over 500 exercises on the mat and different apparatuses. Each exercise is meant to be done with the 7 Principles of Pilates and 5 Parts of the Mind throughout the workout.

7 Pilates Principles:

Concentration, Centering, Control, Precision, Flow, Breath, Rhythm

5 Parts of the Mind:

Intelligence, Intuition, Imagination, Memory, Will

Pilates instruction begins with building a “powerhouse” or “core” with all of the muscles surrounding the spine including the abdominal muscles, low back and buttocks. This whole body exercise program works on building long, lean muscles. For this reason, it has attracted many dancers, however, anyone with or without an athletic or dance background can benefit from Pilates. It can be done on its own or as part of your workout routine. It provides great exercise benefits, strengthening and lengthening your muscles while correcting your posture.

In Pilates, the “no pain no gain” theory is thrown out the window. Instead, exercises are done in a safe but challenging manner with seldom more than 10 reps at a time. No matter what your fitness level may be, you will begin with the basics and continue forward as you are ready.

What To Expect

Pilates is exercise for the whole body. You may experience muscle soreness during or after your workout lasting up to three days. Muscles that are “working” or “burning” are okay to feel. This is sometimes thought of as pain to those who are not used to working out. However, you should not feel real pain during or after your workout.

Although the instructors at The Workshop are highly educated in teaching Pilates, we are neither doctors nor physical therapists. Please communicate with your Instructor about what you are feeling so that we can best adapt the program to your needs.

Pilates Class Types

Private Lessons

Drop in – $111.13
10 pack – $1040.65
Intro Offer (3 lessons) – $247.09

Reduced rate membership options for ranging from $86-$101

A private lesson is a one-on-one session with an instructor. The 45 minute lesson is the ideal way to learn Pilates.

Each body has many different needs based on goals, injuries, strengths or weaknesses. A private lesson will give your body a tailored program with the combination of mat work and apparatus work (equipment). Your program changes as needed.

You may have heard the quote “in ten sessions you will feel better, in twenty sessions you will look better, and in 30 sessions you will have a whole new body.” This quote, from Joseph Pilates, was based on doing the 30 sessions as privates, three times per week, for ten consecutive weeks and is widely used in the Pilates world because it can be true. The important thing to remember is what it means. Most people cannot dedicate ten consecutive weeks and may not be able to afford what 30 private lessons cost in that amount of time. This is why it usually takes longer than ten weeks or 30 sessions to have a “whole new body.”

Privates lessons are prepaid and scheduled by appointment only.

Duet Lessons
(2 only)

Single Session – $80.25
4-Pack – $303.34
8-pack – $552.10

Prices are per person

A duet lesson is a session with two clients to one instructor. The 45 minute lesson is a great lower-cost alternative to a private lesson.

You should be healthy and okay on your own for a few minutes at a time. You are required to know your own program and must be semi-approved before going into this type of lesson. Although most of the time you will do your own program, the instructor may choose to keep everyone together for change of routine. New exercises may be taught, but generally are taught in private lessons.

Also, if you only take semi-privates and/or mat classes regularly, it is important to take an occasional private lesson. This will monitor your progress, fine tune exercises, add new ones, or modify your program if needed. Semis are ideal for those that enjoy to work out in a group setting.

Duet lessons are prepaid and scheduled by appointment only.

Pilates of any kind, whether exclusively mat work or a mix of apparatus work, can be both fun and challenging, as well as should leave you with tangible, real life skills/ knowledge of how to be a better mover in your unique body. This begins with feeling better after class than you felt walking in. Sometimes just hearing a cue, knowing a goal, or knowing how to have the exercise meet you where you are, can change your experience.

Mat work is also the most challenging because it is you and the mat, so knowing how to personalize it for you can make all the difference.

Dress in movement clothing and bring questions if you have them. Any questions can be asked prior to class or at the beginning to go over in class.
